Alexis is perplexed at something on her laptop, while on mine David Rees (an old friend who we know by a pseudonym he made up when applying to be in a band with my roommates and it still feels weird to refer to him by his real name, but since he's kind of famous now I guess we have to) and Paul F. Tomkins talk on mine.
The zookeeper association hosts movie nights at the zoo, where employees can stay after work and watch a movie on a pretty big screen in a theater in one of the exhibit rooms. Last year we were brainstorming what movies we should watch, and someone said "NOT Fierce Creatures," because it was too expected, to zoo-ey, and everyone had seen it already. So naturally, when I posted a poll on Facebook, "Fierce Creatures" was far and away the winner. Okay, fine. I'll just borrow someone's DVD and we'll watch it and we can move on to less cliche choices. Only no one seems to own it.
It came out long enough ago (1997) that most people who own it have a VHS copy. I just went to Best Buy (the last store that still sells DVDs?) and they had almost no DVDs that were from movies more that a year or two old. They didn't even have "Fish Called Wanda." I can buy it online, but I'll have to expedite shipping in order to be sure to have it by movie night (this Thursday) and I really don't want to spend extra money on a movie that I don't really remember but only rated 3 stars on Netflix (no, there's no internet in the room where we're going to watch the movie so no streaming it). I'm lucky enough that our local library system has 2 copies (!) but they are both out. I'm on the edge of making some kind of decision--it's very exciting.
(Before I wrote this post I tweeted "I haven't bought any kind of media in a store in 15 years, and now I'm disappointed that I can't" and David Rees just retweeted me. Weird and funny.)
Five years ago today I posted this and 17 other pictures of Franklin Park:
