Hey my laptop stopped working quite suddenly a week ago!

Not to worry, I just got it back, and all it cost was the equivalent of two of the competitor's laptops. Not that I'm bitter.

Anyway, if you have missed the world of urban nature, I highly recommend you check out Your Wild City a new webcomic by Rosemary Mosco of Bird and Moon comics and Maris Wicks of Human Body Theater.

Hooray for science and nature comics!

I took yesterday off of work, so here I am: by the fire by the shed with my laptop in the backyard. Not pictured: Naragansett Shandy.

I found myself in the odd position of researching where I could buy zoo animal feces, the substance I spend much of my day eradicating. Also there's a red panda footprint.

I can't see the number of this snapshot without thinking of the Cambridge coffeehouse of the same name.
That out of the way, is this snapshot spooky enough to add to our collection of zoo horror movie stills? I kind of think it's not--that guy sweeping doesn't seem like he's going to kill or get killed. It looks like a statement about the dignified loneliness of sweeping a floor. I dunno, what do you think?

Update

So last Friday we tested to see if my laptop is one of those ones that works faster with the electronics immersed in coffee, but it was not to be. So I'm updating from work, and doing most of my internet via phone. So the main thing I use my computer for--uploading pics and sharing them on livejournal--is on hold for the time being.

Also I have stye on my eyelid, and I am assured that both of these things are temporary and will fade into distant memory, with plenty of time for me to enjoy my life until the sun consumes the earth.

Five years ago, July 5th:

This has been the only video game (outside of FB scrabble) that I've played for the past five years. The best parts about it are the communal noncompetitive experience, the pretend instruments that change it from a video game to more of a role playing thing, and most of all the weekly release of new songs. So the game comes with 50 or sixty songs, some of which you are sure to like, some of which you can't help but hate, and some that are unknown to you. But every week for the past five years new songs would come out, and you could choose to buy them and download them or not. I have a collection of over 500 out of nearly 4000 possible songs for the game.

Every week I wanted something like Bad Brains or Firewater to come out, and alas they never did. BUT Dead Kennedys and Mission of Burma songs came out! Almost all of Nirvana's catalog became available, an alarming amount of Jonathan Coulton songs, as well as single tracks by Liz Phair, as well as Paul and Storm. And I learned about bands I'd never heard of before, like Mastodon and Avenged Sevenfold. It was literally my only source of new music for most of the past five years.

This week Harmonix released the last downloadable content for Rock Band they intend to release. My dreams of They Might Be Giants finally relenting and joining in the fun are dashed--Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd as well. Countless indie rock bands from the 90's pop up on my iTunes shuffle "Damn this song should be on rock band!" It is never to be.

The final song released is Don McClean's "American Pie," whose "sad dulcet tones" are a "sad but fitting conclusion to Rock Band's five-plus years of musical history curation..."

I fucking hate that song.

Like many people who have also posted on livejournal today, this morning I woke up to yet another pile of snow on my world. Insult was added all day long, as snow turned to sleet, to graupel, to ice pellets, to freezing rain, to snizzle, and finally merely cold rain. It was a great day to exercise the privilege of autonomy of my job, and stay indoors as much as possible, working on the tick presentation I'll be giving next week.

This winter, every two weeks the Zookeeper Association has been watching movies in the Tropical Forest Hippo Theater. Lately there's been consensus: someone will mention a movie and enough people will chime in with enthusiasm that I feel good about declaring that the movie that we'll watch. No such consensus existed last time, so I gathered a few suggestions: The Blues Brothers, Serenity, Mom and Dad Save the World, Grosse Point Blank, and something I can't remember right now. Serenity was way in the lead when someone (my vice president) suggested The Hunger Games. Being the wishy-washy people pleaser I am, I added it to the list of contenders, and even added Anchorman, based on another person's suggestion.

There were equal numbers of votes for Serenity and The Hunger Games when I brought the issue to vote at the chapter meeting. One complaint I heard from a Serenity supporter was that The Hunger Games was too long. I asked the assembled at the meeting, and those that had seen it refuted the charge. Okay fine (full disclosure, I love Serenity, rated it 5 stars, but I've seen it many times and haven't yet seen The Hunger Games, so I cast my weight in that direction) the decision has been made.

I was trying to attach a picture to the email inviting everyone to movie night when the snapshot alarm went off.

The damn movie (which we'll watch this Tuesday) is 142 minutes long. I'll never trust that lot again.

Winter is crud. There are moments of magic, but I find it hard to rise above the long months of cold and damp and dark. My enthusiasm and creativity plunge, when I should be taking advantage of being homebound, time that could be spent writing and learning and/or making art. I end up writing depressing screeds like this one.

I should say that I am writing this on a new computer, one that has a battery that charges and can be moved from room to room or even outdoors. One that I could plug my microphone into and record my podcast without the electronic interference of the power cable. I read that's a problem from someone on the internet. Also the speakers are twice as loud as those on my old computer. (I'm the kind of person that would replace the radio in my car before the engine.)

Many thanks to my friend Rachel who greatly facilitated the upgrade. I don't make important decisions without being pushed or pulled over the edge, so I can only understate my appreciation. Thank you Rachel!

My goals for the new year are the kind that I'll only fulfill if I have someone there to help me along or give me a substantial shove. The help I need on the "learning to play a new instrument" goal may come from my friend Kiki, who is offering to lend me one of her pointy guitars, and show me a chord or two. The "brew my own beer" goal will be met when the scoffing about how easy it is (supplied by my friends and relatives) gets to be too much and I go buy the damn kit already. I'll also have to stop buying beer for a few months to save up for the kit.

The first Urban Nature Walk of 2013 will happen Sunday the 27th, location to be announced. A good friend who works for the Department of Conservation and Recreation has tentatively agreed to co-lead the walk. She wasn't enthusiastic about leading a walk in places that have been degraded in her mind as "work" but I'm hoping to tap into her knowledge. I also hope that having a group of interested amateurs listening to what she has to say will help spark some of that enthusiasm.

Maybe it's just winter.
