Oops

Keeping up to date with my snapshot hit a snag today when I forgot my camera at work. Here's a cell phone picture I took a couple weeks ago instead:

Coincidentally, our friend [livejournal.com profile] drhoz posted a mantis photo today as well. His has entertaining commentary.

I told drhoz the one I saw was huge. It wasn't, THAT one is!

This was the biggest I've ever seen, about four inches long.

My one was as long and my longest finger and... my hands aren't that big. I was still pretty impressed though, because I had never seen one before and didn't we had them in Europe until that moment.

lots of them in Dedham lately

I have seen facebook posts and photos of mantises in Dedham during the past 2 weeks - at least a half dozen sightings. I also saw one at Fowl Meadow in Milton last week that was huge, easily four inches. They are amazing to watch, and they seem to think the same thing about us - the way they turn and look at us with their other-worldly triangular heads. So freaky and cool.

They are the only insect that can look over their "shoulder" (actually, the anterior edge of the pronotum)! They have raptorial legs! They can fly! With 360° vision! And they are one of the few bugs that can do the "Come at me bro!" pose and make it look ultra bad-ass.

Indeed, they are freaky and cool.
