Okay everyone, we have all of human culture and even nonsense words to draw from. Before we name a dog something that 3 other dogs on the block are named, let us think hard and choose something else. In general, please avoid anything that makes your dog sound like a sports utility vehicle or a stripper. The following names are retired from use for dogs for at least 2 generations:

Abbie
Bailey
Bella
Benji
Buddy
Champ
Charlie
Chico/Chica
Dawson
Gracie
Harley
Holly
Hunter
Jack/Jackson etc
Jake
Lacey
Lily
Maggie
Max etc
Mitzi
Molly
Murphy
Oscar
Pepe
Peyton
Rocco/Rocky
Rosie
Roxy
Sadie
Sammy
Sandy
Sidney
Sierra
Snooki (permanent ban)
Snoopy
Sophie
Stella
Winnie
Winston

Thank you for your cooperation. I will think of 50 more by tomorrow.

People have to stop naming their dogs Lucy also. It gives me whiplash trying to see who's yelling at me at the dog park. It's so prevalent I had to warn some people away who were thinking of naming their daughter after me.

I work with someone named Maggie and I find it hard not to say it in the tone with which I address my dog.

oh, and any variation of chocolate. coco, cocoa, brownie, hershey, even godiva. its not clever, people, its just old and overdone... we get it. Your dog is brown.

Except when its white, and people stick their nose up and say "its COCO, as in CHANEL". Thats stupid too.

Good call. I was thinking of all the dogs in my neighborhood and forgot Coco.

And black dogs (or cats) named Shadow. HE'S DARK LIKE A SHADOW GET IT HURR HURR

Any animal named Lucky is guaranteed to get cancer, hit by a car, and need a splenectomy at the minimum. And I have known way too many dogs named Angel/Sweetie/Honey/etc. whose main interest in life was eating the nice vet tech's face off.

It's true about Molly: one time we at a fruit and vegetable stand, with Molly-the-dog, and there were two other dogs there... both named Molly.

I met a mini poodle last summer named Fifi... I think that name had been retired long enough for it to work again, if only semi-ironically

i kinda like the name monster, but if the dog is a pit then someone might take that the wrong way.
you can always use the name generator at http://www.behindthename.com/

Haha, the two recent dogs in my life were Max and Harley. I tried to stop them with the Max, but they wouldn't listen.

This is interesting culturally though. I've never heard of any dogs with any of the Spanish names you've listed. And the only Murphys I know are humans.

The Spanish names are common for Chihuahuas, and Murphy is very popular in Boston, where Irish-American pride runs strong.

Rover isn't on your list?! Fido ... Spot ... Butch ... Killer ... Satan ... Gnasher ...

Generally in naming rescue kitties I found they named themselves in many cases: one cat with tremendous presence and very long legs was Rama, a little calico was Miramanee (you can go a long way with Trek names if you want to attract interest at the adoption center) - and failing that, plain names like Fred and Burt. I renamed a dog Doggydog in Texas because he was.

Fido and Rover are retro cool. I have never met a dog with either of those names. Killer and Satan are hilarious names until the dog bites someone or kills a cat.
