I haven't forgotten

Hey you two friends who have special posts coming your way in exchange for donating to my charity bike ride! Thanks again and I haven't forgotten. The public giraffe encounters have just started up again, so I should be able to do some stuff with that. As far as the other request--unknown special spots around Boston--I realized looking at my iPhoto library that I spend almost all my time in two locations, home and work. I will take that as a wake-up call to get off my ass and explore or re-explore somewhere new or newish.

The bike ride, by the way, was to raise money for scholarships in the memory of a zookeeper. Jonathan Gilmour was on an overseas trip learning to be a better zookeeper and conservationist when he died suddenly. His parents established the fund in order to give other keepers the opportunities that their son had. We had the ceremony in the Tropical Forest building:

This is right across from the refreshments table--what are they looking at, I wonder?

Leapin' lemur twins!

Two primates interact through eye contact and gestures.

Two scholarship winners. Ed is active in local turtle conservation, and Sarah gets to finish her science degree.

The building was open late for the event, so some keepers stayed on to bring the animals in after, and close the building up. Also we got new hats for our uniforms.

The guests and scholarship recipients were treated to an anteater feeding!

A clear tube with food in it is attached to an aperture in the exhibit, so you get a great closeup view of this astonishing animal, including its tongue!

Sarah is awarded her scholarship.

Amanda is a zookeeper's zookeeper, and goes to every national conference. She used her scholarship to go to the INTERnational scholarship, in Singapore!

Hope will be studying honeybees with her scholarship! Here she's expressing how much she likes honeybees, "Just a little!"

Brandi is a 10 year veteran in the gorilla keeping field. Her training program is frequently in the news.
Congrats to all the scholars! Thanks for making the lives of captive animals better, and for your amazing work with wildlife conservation. And thanks to everyone who supports us!
