Today I found Gigi in a calm place.

She made eye contact. I politely looked away.

is it polite for gorillas to look away? is it different for young gorillas or do they not look at you, too busy playing?

Direct eye-contact is impolite for most animals (it's seen as aggressive, predatory, or a challenge).

What animals are cool with you looking in their eyes?

Can't think of any of the top of my head. I said "most" in case there was some exception I wasn't aware of. You can't really look "in" the eyes of a lot of prey animals due to their placement on the sides of their heads, but they are definitely aware that they are being looked at.

It's great that you gave her her space.

Also, she seems a ghost in that first photo.
