Red river hogs are some of the most beautiful pigs I've ever seen. All red fur with a dorsal white stripe and white mask, ornamented with long tasseled elflike ears. I've built a rapport with this male, but the two females won't let me in the enclosure with them.
These animals are native to west Africa. I've found them to be very agile and intelligent; they are clean, in that they consistently choose one area in which to defecate. However, like all pigs (in my experience) their rooting and burrowing instincts, and great strength, mean that they are potentially very destructive. They love enrichment, and eagerly search for food using scent and tactile senses. Can't wait to see what they do on exhibit.
