My friend Siobhan is a zookeeper at the Capron Park Zoo, and offered to give Fiona and I a behind-the-scenes tour. Here's the beautiful eye of one of the Visayan warty hogs.

Even though we arrived at Capron Park unexpectedly, it only took a few texts to have a great experience! A friend of mine (and former coworker) is a zookeeper at the Capron Park Zoo! She met us inside and took us in to meet the Visayan warty pigs!

It's a shame that these good looking animals are critically endangered, but I'm so grateful that I got to spend some time with them!

Capron Park Zoo is a small zoo in Attleboro Massachusetts, near Rhode Island. It's the closest zoo to me that I hadn't been to yet (now York's Wild Kingdom holds that place), and a former coworker is a zookeeper there. In fact, I've met most of the staff from this zoo, owing to our regular zookeeper meet ups! I thoroughly enjoyed this zoo, which was clean and attractive, providing a lot of value for a relatively small space. Their lions look very different from the one at Franklin Park--a different subspecies I think.

This past week was National Zookeeper Week! Our zoo has been trying to come together to find ways to celebrate it that honor the people in the career, educate the public, and promote the profession itself. We have a short video playing on a loop in the Tropical Forest, daily encounters with keepers who discuss their personal and professional experiences, and support from the zoo in the form of buttons advertising the week and social media announcements. Many other zoos had various events this year, and I think it's building momentum. Hopefully the public perception of zookeeping is beyond the idea that we throw fish to otters, shovel up after elephants, cuddle baby koalas, and get mauled by lions.

My dad and I got up from our hotel, took a cab up the windy windy narrow roads up to the "village" of Trinity (not much village to speak of really--a pub, a church) to Durrell Wildlife, which most people still know as The Jersey Zoo. They changed their name in 1995, after founder Gerry Durrell died. We hurriedly met some people, figured out where our dorm room was, dropped off our bags, and dad and I went our separate ways--he went back to St. Helier to do some tourism. I dug out my notebook and handouts and started up some school. Good introductory lectures (made even better by British accents, I confess) and then a tour of the zoo!

I'd take pictures like this. (She's not dead, she's half-asleep.)
