Dogtown

We went back to Dogtown again on Sunday. Here are my pictures. Kind of a weird assortment, really.

The day before was rainy, and several paths had changed into streams.

From oddnewengland.com: "In 1892, a man named James Merry was killed on Dogtown Common by a taunted domestic animal and engraved stones mark the spot of the attack and where his body was found." Apparently this imbecile was "hazing" a bull, when it killed him.

Similar, but much better photographs at my wife's journal.

Is the red in the letters some sort of lichen or some pigment applied by humans? Have you come across any maps or drawings of Dogtown from when it was a community?

The red is paint.

I haven't found any illustrations of old Dogtown, but I did read The Last Days of Dogtown which is a very evocative dramatization of daily life in the village. (life pretty much sucked)

I also just found this map of the Babson rocks today.
