Yesterday was perfect weather for tracking: a small amount of snow overnight, just below freezing during the day so that the tracks didn't melt and distort, and overcast so that photos of the snow didn't white out. Maggie is noticing something. What is it?

The Fens are former salt marsh in the center of what is now Boston. Cut off from the ocean by a dam across the Charles River, protected and landscaped by city fathers and Edward Law Olmsted, it's a quiet swamp park surrounded by museums, universities, busy neighborhoods, and the nation's oldest ball park. The Muddy River winds slowly through it.

Weather

An old joke I tell too often involves a visitor to New England who complains about the weather. His New Englander friend objects saying that New England has all different kinds of weather, at which the first man says "Yes, but all in one day?!"

This morning it was clear for a while, then a cold nasty rain began to fall. Then the sun came out and the sky was blue. The next moment there were whiteout conditions with high winds and heavy snow. We walked out into lightly falling flurries. In a little while it was sunny again. Just now there were some thunderclaps. I looked at the window and it's snowing heavily again.

Where are the locusts?

I took Jim to a Boston Derby Dames bout last night. Jim actually belongs to my good friend, dogsitter, and drinkin' buddy Alex ([livejournal.com profile] belen1974), who is also a scorekeeper. I watched the bout while Jim slept. It was the Comonaughties versus the Wicked Pissahs. I chose to root for the Pissahs, for a couple reasons: their team name (derived from a typical New Englander's accented evaluation of how good something is) as well as their symbol. I can't seem to find a large version of it, but it pictures a gull entangled in a six-pack holder. I wholeheartedly support the use of local urban wildlife in sports team iconography. Their mascot, pictured above leading the pack, is "Sully tha Gully.
