One of the problems with the invasive giant reed Phragmites australis is that the huge dried stalks can present a fire hazard, especially if the grass is growing near a building.

These aren't my pictures, but they capture the potential problem very well.

It was an uncommonly nice first day of spring (probably one of the 10 best days of the year) so I took Charlie on a longer walk than usual. This is our old friend The Muddy River, another mile or two downstream than you usually see it on my journal.

Canada geese, Landmark Center (the fenway).


The Back Bay seen from Cambridge, later that day. We're still having an all-rain Nor'easter, 24 hours later.

The Fens are former salt marsh in the center of what is now Boston. Cut off from the ocean by a dam across the Charles River, protected and landscaped by city fathers and Edward Law Olmsted, it's a quiet swamp park surrounded by museums, universities, busy neighborhoods, and the nation's oldest ball park. The Muddy River winds slowly through it.

When I came home today a blimp was circling the area. Then I walked to my mailbox (coincidentally in the direction of Fenway Park) and there were several helicopters nervously hovering around.

On this day in 365 Urban Species: Tulip poplar, an attractive native tree, that this year began turning about a month and a half ago.

For those of you who are not Bostonians or otherwise in the know, the Fenway is the name of a city park (and the road that runs along it). The Muddy River winds through the Fenway before meeting the Charles. There's a famous baseball field nearby. On Sunday I balanced some rocks on one of the many puddingstone bridges in the park.

Yes, I finally got off my lazy, bloated, car-softened rump and rode my bicycle. Now I have to do it a little bit every day until I don't feel like I'm going to die of an asthma attack before getting blood blisters on my perineum. Damn, I'm out of shape!
