Anyone know what this little tree is? Fir, maybe?

The sun finally fought its way out, briefly, as I circled Jamaica Pond desperately looking for more species for the 365 project.

The good news is that I found some. The bad news? Oh, yeah: more fungi.

Fir looks likely for that little tree. The way to tell is that fir needles come off the sides of the branches and are flat. Their needles are kind of like longer, straighter hemlock needles in that sense. Spruce needles emerge all around the branch, while larch (which would be bare now) needles emerge in circular clusters; pines are in bundles.
Balsam fir (Abies balsamea) is most likely, as it's the only fir species I know to be in the east. It's also a pioneer species and fairly adept at making use of human disturbed habitats.

Is more fungi actually bad news?

an eastern hemlock maybe?

The flat looking needle configuration and the droopy wide spaced branches make me think so. Any little thumb nail sized fruits like this http://egghead.psu.edu/~ma_fort/Dendrology/easternhemlock.htm
on it or on the ground near it?

Firs are generally fuller, branches more upright and needles rounded about the twigs.

If it is a hemlock and has some white shit on it you have 2 species...the second being Wooly Adelgid...http://images.google.com/images?q=wooly+adelgid&svnum=10&hl=en&lr=&safe=off&c2coff=1&rls=GGLR%2CGGLR%3A2006-06%2CGGLR%3Aen
