Yep, a new baby--some member of the public attempted to raise it, gave up, and dropped it off at our sister sanctuary. We're raising it to be an education animal.

Hmmm...I wonder how some member of the public ended up with a baby owl anyway...Do you know the story?

I don't know the story. Speculation is that it fell out of the nest maybe. We find that people are keeping wildlife as pets and doing unlicenced rehab all the time.

That's a mean machine in the making!

I've always had an affinity for owls, from the tiny burrowing ones we were surrounded by in CA, to the grays who cohabited with us at the farm. We could eventually distinguish between them, and named them for easy ID.
We spent a lot of time watching them; one even began leaving her pellets at our back door!

Two of those arrived earlier this week at Cape Wildlife, though ours are considerably younger. When one of the other volunteers took me in for a peek, one hissed at us so we backed off. My ultimate goal at Cape Wildlife is to do the raptors, but these owls will grow up and be released before I get there. Ah well, there will be others. Maybe I can go to the release party.
