At work there was quite a commotion when one of the landscapers noticed this pair of screech owls and their 5 chicks in a small tree next to the gift shop! They got a lot of attention from animal lovers with binoculars and cameras. The next day they were seen a couple trees away, behind the gift shop where it was a bit quieter. Nice to see these wild predators doing well here.

Right next to the front door of the gift shop this evergreen tree was sprouting an unusual growth. A very quiet still dove pretended I didn't notice it, and then so did I.

So the whole point of me going through everything I went through to get a suit was to wear it to Zootopia. This is the zoo's biggest fundraiser of the year, with big money auctions and awards and local politicians and so on. I found myself gravitating toward other zoo people and their animals for comfort.

These tracks suggest some drama. The parallel lines at the right were made by the wing feathers of a bird. The bird probably dropped out of our pine tree onto the snow, following the sound of a small mammal burrowing there. The footsteps at the left are confusing, but I think they belong to the bird as well. I suspect the bird (an owl) dropped onto the snow, missed its prey, then hopped a few steps before flying off. Before the blizzard, Alexis found a mallard wing in the same spot (which is also the same spot I found the owl pellet). Hope to see the animal responsible for all these signs soon!

This is the first owl pellet I've found in the yard! It's been flattened and misshapen by being out in the elements. It's composed of short gray hairs, which I suspect are mostly from voles. The only owls we hear calling are screech owls, so that's the most likely source, though it's a little on the large size for that.

Here's one of our new zookeeper interns taking Widget the screech owl out for a spin!

And some nice oyster mushroom gills, why not?

Wait, did you guess "an animal?" because then you would have been right. This screech owl has become the most popular Franklin Park Zoo attraction, at least among those of us who work there.

Darkling beetles Zophobas morio. This is an example of an exhibit animal that also happens to be raised for food for other animals. Their larvae are superworms.

Amanda and Widget.

Widget was found as a chick, after the tree he was living in was cut down. After a stint at a wildlife rehabilitator he came to be an educational animal for the zoo.

A small crowd gathers in the rain to get a glimpse of the new baby kangaroo.

It's pretty at the zoo, even in the rain.

I just posted this on facebook and it's getting liked like you wouldn't believe. Kiki is teaching Edna how to handle Fenris.

Owls in the snow. I also stood on a pond. February 16th, 2007 also marked the first time since I started doing 3:00 snapshots that I missed one due to technical issues. Now that happens all the time and I don't sweat it.

Suffered some work-related insomnia overnight, woke up at 2 in the morning thinking about a specific problem--the infuriating thing is that I didn't make any progress with it. I used to think the phrase "don't lose any sleep over it" was an empty cliche.

It had been a while since we visited Dane Park, and we discovered lots of tiny life forms. It was delightful.

This wildflower appears to be a kind of bellwort, or Uvularia; I've never seen it before, which was very exciting.Read more... )
