What's the tiny thing with the beeeeeeeg eyes?

[identity profile] urbpan.livejournal.com 2006-08-31 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
It's an eastern screech owl. It's molting the feathers on its head so it looks particularly silly.

Those photos of the owl are beautiful.

Thanks!

Too cute!!

Is the 2nd from the top a kestrel? Those look like kestrel markings to me. Bubo virginianus and Otus asio are easy for me to spot.

Hurray for raptor pics!

[identity profile] aemiis-zoo.livejournal.com 2006-08-31 04:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Make that the top 2. I am guessing they are both kestrel, but what's up with its lower feathers?

[identity profile] urbpan.livejournal.com 2006-08-31 06:13 pm (UTC)(link)
She's wet. She just took a bath.

[identity profile] aemiis-zoo.livejournal.com 2006-08-31 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Hrmmmm...I have never seen a kestrel take a bath...

[identity profile] mercureal.livejournal.com 2006-08-31 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
does the third bird have a cataract?

[identity profile] urbpan.livejournal.com 2006-08-31 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
We think he may be developing one, but most of what you see is damage caused by a fall--he was in a tree when it was felled and lost a wing and much of his vision.

Awww. I really like the second one of the kestrel. Is he messy?

[identity profile] urbpan.livejournal.com 2006-08-31 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
She's still wet from her bath.

At RCV the kestrels liked to decorate their cages with shredded mouse guts. Very festive. But their cages were pretty small, which might have had something to do with it.

I call that "tinsel."

[identity profile] miz-geek.livejournal.com 2006-09-01 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's a good thing you don't celebrate Christmas! I can just see the tree. Owl pellet ornaments. Mouse gut tinsel. I shudder to think what would be on top.

These are such gorgeous pics...:)
BTW my fiance was all "freaked out" I got a package from you, and I was like, "UH it's a BOOK" and he's all, "He put a love note in it and a topless picture of himself" and I said, "If I really WANTED a pic of him I know where to get one. His wife IS my lj friend too..."
He is just so weird...:P
