Brighton Skunk
This isn't a great photograph, but I had to share. This is in my coworker's yard, on a street behind Commonwealth Avenue in Brighton, Mass. I wanted to get closer, but, you know.

We used to see skunks near Comm Ave all the time! I wonder if this is the daughter/granddaughter of one of our favourite skunks. They're so pretty!

How close were you to the skunk? Was it aware of your presence?

I got to about 30 feet of the skunk. He was definitely aware of me. His tail went up whenever I made a noise.

I wonder if that might be the skunk that leaves his musk around our place.

Huh.
I've been within 5-10 feet of every SomerVille skunk I've ever seen (that's about 7 now) and I've never been sprayed, or even seen a tail go up...
Do you all expect to get sprayed if you get near a skunk? I never expect it, and it never happens.
Incidentally, there's another 23 for the day. In the (bad) news this morning:
Suspected Sunni Arab gunmen killed 23 policemen Sunday, including 17 in one attack
Replace 'killed' with 'hugged' and 'policemen' with 'bunnies' and it becomes easier to read.
Hail eris, etc.

We adopted Polly 9 years ago and her name then was "Skunk". I didn't care for that name, but you can see the resemblance

Just before I skunk attacks, they turn toward you and stomp their feet. They only spray as a last resort, it burns their eyes as well.
