You may have noticed I posted twice yesterday. That's because I'm going to see my parents out in the Pioneer Valley today, and I won't be bringing the computer. I will be bringing the camera, and I'll head up to Springfield (the country's biggest Springfield, mind you, at about 150,000 people) to see if I can find some species to finish up the year, like maybe a rat. If you live near Springfield and know where there are rats, maybe you could make some noise and scare them into the street so I could photograph some. See you Monday!

Well, try up around 6 Flags. I once saw a rat at the edge of one of the parking lots. However, being that it's winter and there are no people throwing foodstuffs everywhere, they've probably moved on to greener pastures.

My dad lives about a mile from there! And before it was six flags (it was Riverside Park) I worked there! But I didn't see any rats this weekend.

Did you spend much time in the area?

If you are hunting for a few last species, the Big Dig has planted a wide variety of trees in the parcel of land across from the International Place building. I understand there are several unusual species, as the concept for this parcel is an "urban arboretum." I can get you a list of the species if you're interested. (Unfortunately...it's winter and I think they're all deciduous.)

As far as spotting rats goes, if you don't catch them in Sprinfield, try the semi-lawn area behind the Haymarket.

I'm happy to hear about the arboretum! I hope the trees survive and make that place a new urban oasis. I'll try to check it out sometime. The end of the year is going to be like blood from a stone, but I'm getting them, drop by drop. Thanks for the tip!

Has something happened to the rats in the green line?

The only rats I've ever seen near the green line are the ones near my house--and those bastards are quick! I remember seeing a good amount of rats in the alleys behind Newbury street; maybe I should take a trip back there.

The alleyways of Kenmore Square are excellent rat habitat. Pretty much the same as the alley behind Newbury Street. They're in and under the dumpsters. Basically anywhere food is served and there is a dumpster in the alley will work. It helps to have a dog with you to flush them out, got to be quick with the camera shutter.

Haymarket does have some of the finer rats in the city, nice and big with good looking fur.
