I was thinking of Tito today. I was out in the meadow watching all the turkeys. There are baby turkeys! What are they called? The male turkeys were proudly displaying their feathers. What's that called, when they splay their back feathers? The hens were sticking close to where the baby turkeys were hiding in the brush beneath the trees. Tito came to mind.
I call all baby birds "chicks," but the special term for baby turkeys is "poult." The breeding display involved "fanning" the feathers (I haven't found a more technical term) a special gait called strutting, and a special call: the gobble. (Gobbling is the loudest of the over 25 different vocalizations of turkeys.)
Thanks for the info! I knew I could count on you. Strutting - ha, that suits the toms very well! I've been listening to all the different sounds the turkeys make.
Birds seem to be very social creatures - the geese hang out with the turkeys, the little birds hang out with all of them. And the turkeys seem to move in herds.
