We had ourselves a little adventure at the Quincy Seashore. There were many opportunities for noticing things and making discoveries along the beach and in the salt marsh. We found this tiny shark, which I can't identify because I didn't at the time know what field markings to look for. I did a little research and I think next time I'll have a chance. It's probably a spiny dogfish.

There are eight more photographs, including another dead thing that might be a little harder to look at than this well-picked over fish. Standard dead animal warning. (It's not that bad, but I thought you should know). There's also a panorama that might push the edges of your page around.

Maggie, Alexis, and Alex. In the background you can see the Wollaston Yacht Club (the shack on stilts), the Boston skyline (which looks tiny even though it's the next city to the north) a bit of the Squantum neighborhood, and the harbor islands.

Wollaston Beach is nice enough, but despite it being in the high 40's, the wind whipped through us pretty well. Plus there were a lot of other dogs, which we try to avoid. So we went and found an accessible part of a nearby salt marsh, which was much more interesting.

This doorless old safe was the first thing we found. Cool!

This unfortunate fellow is hard to recognize, but his size and remaining hair tips him off as a raccoon.

Dentition is a good clue, too.

A sign marks the place as someone's turf.

Your guess is as good as mine.

We had all our dogs, and in the sky the conditions were right for a little sun dog.

Alexis' photos of the beach are here.

Oh man did the pups leave smelling like salt marsh? They're lovely places but at low tide....

Yep, my first thought was "dogfish" when I saw that top photo. Ah, my good friend the dogfish. We got to spend some quality time together in the first year biology lab's anatomy section.

That's one of my lab partners getting a bit closer to the dogfish than I cared to.

I love beach-combing in winter - so many more interesting things wash up on shore!

If you picked those two carcasses up and disposed of them, then you'd have my job! :)
hahahahahahhhahahaha
I kid, but not.
That shark, way cool, but not as cool as something I saw a month ago. I must post it, I know I am behind and whatnot...:P
That DOES look like a raccoon but somehow the teeth are different than on the one I saw yesterday...who knows, that one was attacked by dogs and getting a decap so maybe it's teeth were messed up...
Who knows.
Great pics. I am not allowed to take pics of some dead things, it's kind of disrespectful since I dispose of them, but if it's something way interesting I do.
You should have taken that cabinet thingy home! :)
Love the panorama!!!!

There's a lot of stuff I'm not allowed to take pictures of at work, too. Too bad, it's pretty interesting. Good thing I find interesting things when I'm not at work!

The cabinet thingy must have weighed 200 pounds!

The close-up of the raccoon(?) teeth is pretty neat.

Also, pup in a sweater, can that get any more adorable?

I just finished dissecting a dogfish, and that would be my guess as to what it is, too. That raccoon carcass is mega creepy, though! Love the teeth.
