We had ourselves a little adventure at the Quincy Seashore. There were many opportunities for noticing things and making discoveries along the beach and in the salt marsh. We found this tiny shark, which I can't identify because I didn't at the time know what field markings to look for. I did a little research and I think next time I'll have a chance. It's probably a spiny dogfish.

There are eight more photographs, including another dead thing that might be a little harder to look at than this well-picked over fish. Standard dead animal warning. (It's not that bad, but I thought you should know). There's also a panorama that might push the edges of your page around.Read more... )

On this day in 365 Urban Species: Matrimony vine

[livejournal.com profile] belen1974, [livejournal.com profile] rockbalancer, [livejournal.com profile] cottonmanifesto, [livejournal.com profile] chaggie and I went on a hiking adventure at Mt. Misery, conservation land in Lincoln Massachusetts. I reasoned that away from the shore there was less icing, and so hiking would not be so difficult. It was, in fact, pretty strenuous. We also got lost, adding a couple miles to the hike, and ended up scaling the mountain (a tiny Massachusetts mountain, but hard to do anyway) and hiking through frozen swamps and along the Sudbury River. All the above lj people have posted pictures of the hike (or will soon, hint hint rockbalancer), and it might be fun for you to compare them.

To adventure!

Deer Island

[livejournal.com profile] cottonmanifesto, [livejournal.com profile] rockbalancer, and I (and the dogs) walked around Deer Island yesterday. It's part of the Boston Harbor Island National Recreation Area despite being attached to the town of Winthrop. These days it is mostly known for being the location of Boston's state of the art sewage treatment plant. Yesterday it was noteworthy for being brutally windy and cold. When we got to the furthest tip of the peninsula, it felt like the skin of our faces was being blown off with ice. Still, it is a unique and strangely beautiful place, and we did see quite a few winter ducks, including goldeneyes, eiders, and mergansers. The water was strangely clear and blue.

Days like yesterday are why I need to bring a camera to work with me every day.
