Just a quick note to inform you if you don't already know (or subscribe to the rss feed), there's a new batch of "Get your war on" (My new Filing Technique is Unstoppable) comics out. David Rees tackles murderous vets, the state of the union address, and the primaries, and I found myself reading them out loud to Alex and Alexis, laughing my head off (so much for my no more politics pledge--I should have told you to read my lips).

For Example:

Rees appears to be promising that this comic strip series will end with the Bush administration. Fortunately for his fans, he will continue to be very actively funny in various other ways. For example, if I lived in Brooklyn, I'd be going to this tonight.

Also, I should be leaving the house and going to work, but it's still pitch black out. Can I call in with SAD?

EDIT: oh, and gung hay fat choy everyone, especially my brother. This "year of the rat" is going to seem humorlessly ironic to this pest control technician. My favorite rodent species (as a pet) has become a very difficult problem to solve in my day to day.

According to "The World Without Us" by Alan Weisman, rats won't do so well if humans spontaneously disappear. I don't know if that's a reassuring thought or what...

He also believes that dogs will struggle to survive, except the few that manage to integrate with wolves and/or coyotes, but cats will thrive. Hmm.

Rats probably would disappear from urban areas, but they seem to do fine in other places where they've been introduced, especially islands. Although maybe if left to their own devices they'd just consume all the resources and starve themselves out.

I accumulated a bunch of books about urban species, many of which I have not read. Not sure if I have that rat book. I have "the story of rats" here in front of me, though. I should probably send them all to [livejournal.com profile] brush_rat.

Aww, your a pest control technician?! I totally have 4 pet rats. I had 5 at one point, but they're all getting up there in age and one passed away over the summer.

Yeah, rats are great pets, except for their high vet bills and short life spans.

You're not kidding there! I got 5 within 6 months of each other.. Vet bills aside (Because I never mind shelling out for them or my pups...I just spent $300! Because my pit/beagle mix decided to eat a pair of folded clean mens socks. All it woulda taken was a bottle of stool softener for 2 bucks!) But I don't think I'll ever get another rat because I seriously a, not dealing well with the fact that they are all getting to that age where I'm going to start losing 'em. they don't live nearly long enough...

I wish calling in with SAD was reasonable. Due to global warming, I think, I haven't had as much of a problem with it this year as I have for the past 8. We'll see, eh?

Anyway, I hope you get to feeling better. Thanks for posting the comic.

I figure humans keeping rats as pets in some small way might help balance out all the bad karma from the way we constantly torture their species in labs, because ya know, they don't really feel pain and it doesn't matter anyway because we're so superior to them.
