Attention Boston Area Birders

A credible report of a not-quite-adult bald eagle flying over Jamaica Pond has come in to the Boston Birds google list. It was seen two days ago. It is likely that it will return, looking for weakened waterfowl and carrion.

In December 2007 a young eagle was seen on the pond feeding on a goose carcass. A few years before that an adult bald eagle was seen on the ice making use of the same food source. They aren't common in Boston, but they do live in our suburbs and spend time on our waterways.

I've been hearing, but have not caught sight of, a raptor crying above my Washington Square home. A very clear, high "Kriya!" I wonder who that is? It could be a redtail.

Bald eagles are known to nest up in Newburyport, so I'm not surprised some of them venture a few hours south.

I hope you get to see it.

That's funny. Just yesterday a client was telling me he had seen an incredibly striking, large raptor on a hike in Umstead park down here last fall. He couldn't identify it for the longest time, and then happened on a description of an adolescent bald eagle, which is what he had seen. They're apparently making a slow comeback in Eastern NC.

And I still think I saw an eagle outside my office window in Cambridge a couple weeks ago. I just clicked on your links and yes, it looked very much like that bird.

The one I saw about a week ago was up over the Merrimack River in Nashua/Hudson NH.
