Alexis and I set off for New York City, the first time the two of us traveled there together. I was quite skeptical about traveling by car--traffic, parking, etc. We were on our way to [livejournal.com profile] buboniclou's wedding, where Alexis was going to be the photographer.

We just tried to meet up with my friend Lila ([livejournal.com profile] rockbalancer) and were thwarted by other peoples' tragedy.

We were trying to meet her at a beachside place on the Pacific Coast Highway when we encountered not one but two major accidents. We waited at the site of the first one for about twenty five minutes, watching emergency vehicles and police officers and such do their important work, when a helicopter landed on the road to take away the least fortunate person involved. Once the helicopter left we drove past and saw the ruined motorcycle being cleaned up.

About a half mile down the road we were stopped by flashing lights again. We couldn't see what was going on, and probably that's just as well. A police officer was talking to the driver of the car ahead of us, so I rolled down my window and listened. I heard him say "Oh this won't be opened up again for hours" before that car did a u turn and left. We did the same and I contacted Lila to let her know we were very sad that we were going to miss her, but still pretty lucky.

A commercial passenger jet in New York has apparently struck a flock of geese and crashed into the Hudson River. I can't believe the rotten luck that this has happened on such a brutally cold day. It sounds like there are a lot of injuries but the radio and tv (both of which are chattering in my ears) haven't said anything about deaths. It will be interesting to hear how this pans out. My local CBS station is running the feed from a New York station. They just now said everyone was safely removed from the aircraft. Phew! Get these people some cocoa, stat!

The days are actually getting noticeably longer. I came home with the beginnings of a gorgeous sunset as a backdrop. The tall buildings of the hospital area were bathed in pink light. Anyone planning any big holiday parties for Feb 2?

Usually when you walk on snow, the friction of your step melts it a little and crushes it flat making a bootprint. Today I was following a keeper, watching his boots, and they made holes in the snow, but the crushed snow didn't melt flat. Instead the empty tracks would fill from the sides with fine dry powder. I've never observed that before.

Anyway, be safe out there everyone, especially you lunatics in the midwest.

Imagine you are driving along a pretty busy highway and you see a badly injured animal in the road. Its innards are out a little, but it's alive and conscious. For the sake of the example, the animal is one that is common, but not invasive, like a possum in the eastern US or a red fox in the British Isles or Europe (can't think of an example for Australia, but you get the idea, right?)

What do you do? Do you move the animal off the road (with a shovel or something so you don't get bit)? Do you try to run the animal over and kill it more quickly? Do you try to kill it with something in your car (a shovel, some other tool)? Suppose it's a weekend or at night, and you can't get a hold of a rehabber, vet, or animal rescue org, what then?

Many of us have experienced something close to this, and I'd guess that most of us didn't feel any better after the experience.

Your thoughts?
