When it's one of the Gorilla's birthdays, the keepers decorate the exhibit and fill it with special treats and a cake (made of gorilla biscuits and yogurt). Kimani was born on November 24th 2004; she's a fully grown ten year old female gorilla now.

Here are Kimani's parents, Kiki and Kitombe, finding popcorn and other treats. Kitombe was showing amorous intentions toward Kiki on this day, but she wasn't that into it.

Here is a news story about a veterinary procedure at Franklin Park Zoo--an examination and cardiac screening of our oldest male gorilla.

The article includes this picture of the goings-on:

It's amazing how many people you can fit into a gorilla cage when you need to. Pictured are almost all my zoo hospital coworkers, my best zoo buddy Kikipuff, 3 other zookeepers, and some visiting doctors (who are the focus of the article above). Also Kitombe, the western lowland gorilla, who did great from the moment he presented his shoulder for the injection of sedative until he woke up and accepted a treat from the head vet.

Western Lowland Gorilla Gorilla gorilla gorilla

Between 6 and 8 million years there lived an animal that whose descendants would include both gorillas and humans. Gorillas are the largest existing primates, with big males like Kitombe weighing up to 400 pounds. Gorillas eat plant material and, occasionally, insects. They are the least arboreal of the great apes, spending most of their time foraging on the forest floor.

Kitombe is one of two three males at Franklin Park Zoo; he was born in 1986 at the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans. He is the father of Kira Kimani, who was born earlier this year. The whole group has their own website with information about each individual.
