On my tumblr (same url as this one--just dot tumblr instead of dot livejournal) I just posted a short rant about Christianity. The context is that two apparently fake tumblr accounts started following mine out of nowhere. They look like phishing accounts but are wrapped in the cloth of people (young pretty girls, natch) whose lives went wrong but were saved by Jesus.

My rant was probably uncalled for--after all, these accounts were most likely not even human, never mind Christian. But I felt inspired to write, which is a nice feeling. What I wrote could hurt the feelings of the faithful--and I have friends here and in real life who are Christians, and I would never say these things to their (your) face. Does that make me a hypocrite or what?

If you are interested (and haven't already seen it on tumblr), it follows behind the cut.

My neighbors drew this wonderful art on the sidewalk on our block. It's one of my favorite stories from the Old Testament, I guess because it involves animals. The short of it is that the Creator feels the need to start fresh, and gets one human and his family to round up representatives of all the animals onto a giant boat. Then the Creator kills his creation with a massive storm and flood that lasts more than a month. The 40 days and 40 nights on the floating zoo must have been a terrible ordeal. The Creator thought ahead to order Noah to bring more of the animals that were considered clean for eating--have to feed those big cats something!

When it was all over, the Creator produces a gorgeous multicolored band of light across the sky--a rainbow--and declares that it is his sign that the deluge is over, and that it will appear again when ever it rains, as a symbol of the agreement not to destroy the world again.

(Probably this story came up because of all the flooding that happened last week!)

I just learned about Juneteenth. I can't say I care much for the name, but if there was ever an event in United States history that deserved a National holiday, the ending of slavery is it. Let's call it Emancipation Day, and give everyone a chance to be happy that slavery is behind us, and be introspective about the fact that our ancestors tolerated it so late into our history.
