Fir looks likely for that little tree. The way to tell is that fir needles come off the sides of the branches and are flat. Their needles are kind of like longer, straighter hemlock needles in that sense. Spruce needles emerge all around the branch, while larch (which would be bare now) needles emerge in circular clusters; pines are in bundles. Balsam fir (Abies balsamea) is most likely, as it's the only fir species I know to be in the east. It's also a pioneer species and fairly adept at making use of human disturbed habitats.
When I posted this one, I wondered if I should hold off on posting the adelgid so I could use it for another post.
The little tree above has thicker, longer needles than a hemlock. If anything, it looks kind of like a yew that's been strung out into xmas tree form. I need to take a forestry class or something.

Firs are generally fuller, branches more upright and needles rounded about the twigs.
