We are in Narsarsuaq, Greenland. Greenland isn't as bleak as you've been led to believe, at least not in Summer. "Welcome to sunny southern Greenland," has been a standard greeting here since the Americans built a military base here (at the Greelanders' request) in 1941. I can't explain what this park bench is for, but it does give you a nice view of the runway, if that's what you are into.

Our "easy" hike had some interesting challenges.

We took a wrong turn and ended up in a dry bog. The spongy moss was shin-deep, and I felt bad walking on it, although it was kind of cool.

As usual, I was the only one crawling around on the ground to get pictures of small things.

The big picture view was admittedly more impressive.

Niviarsiaq, Greenland's national flower.

We saw lots of bluebells. We learned you can eat them, and make jelly from them.

Our primary objective: get to the vantage point to see the glacier. Secondary: keep my dad from falling off the mountain. Good job on number one, B- on number two, but we got back uninjured.

I think you're talking about Shelly, she is a nice lady from northwestern Australia who was with us on our tour.

1. That dilapidated bridge is a dead ringer for one in Enfield. Weird.

2. The landscape shots are great. I still have no desire to take orders to Thule, though.

3. Do they have anything about "Glacier Girl" or The Lost Squadron there?

I'm jealous

My dad was a pilot in WWII and played a major role in "Project Nannook", the exploration and mapping of Greenland at the start of the cold war. As the Captain of a B-17 called the"Arctic Queen" he explored large parts of the world that had likely never been seen by human eyes. Until the advent of airplanes large enough to fly hundreds of miles from the base it is unlikely that most of the inland areas of Greenland were ever explored, even by the native population. Dad was there for the development of aerial photography as well as the early days of the American presence on Thule Air Force Base. The Manuel Menendez Operations Center on the base is named after him.

So that's what Greenland looks like. You are intrepid.

What's with the B-? Did he fall partway down and you hauled him up? At least he looks solid enough :-)

He slipped and fell twice but wasn't hurt. He did some impressive clambering up and down ladders onto boats, too, without incident.
