Urban Nature Walk in Bussey Brook Meadow
Jul. 1st, 2013 08:07 pm
This past Sunday we had an Urban Nature Walk in the Bussey Brook Meadow Urban Wild. This little chunk of land connects the Forest Hills rapid transit stop to the Arnold Arboretum, making it very easy for any car-free Bostonian to get there. As it happens, two of us came by car, two by bicycle. This photo is from the end of the walk, when we emerged from an Arboretum gate to find an abundance of black raspberries!

Urban Nature Walk in the Arboretum
Mar. 17th, 2013 05:56 pmThis month I want to make up for missing an Urban Nature Walk in February by having an extra one in March. That extra one is today, an easy stroll through the Arnold Arboretum, our local tree museum. The next one is March 31st at Quincy Quarry.

A friend asked me beforehand, what's in bloom at the Arboretum? Well, it's very early in the year still, but the skunk cabbage is blooming!

My dad came up to visit! Details not to miss: "Lick" by my head is J.P. Licks; my hat was made for me by

Earlier that day, my dad and I saw a red-tailed hawk in the Arboretum.

Pilewort, an herb related to buttercup, once used to treat hemorrhoids. (Also called lesser celandine.) Found lots of it blooming in the wet areas of the Bussey Brook Urban Wilds (which seems to be called "Bussey Brook Meadow" now, and is part of the Arboretum.)

Arboretum unw
May. 14th, 2007 07:25 amI didn't take too many pictures on last week's Urban Nature Walk at the Arnold Arboretum. Maybe that's because I was too busy yakkin'. Here are two.

This giant European Beech demands climbing and (for some people apparently) incising with graffiti.

My dad and Justin talking in the pines. Something about this walk made people spread out--there were only eight of us, but we were all over the place. I actually had to call one section of the group on my cell phone to get us back together. Beautiful place, though!
