This is from a letter from my father, which he sent to several dozen people, so I don't think he'll mind me excerpting it here. He gets one date wrong--I moved to Boston in 1987 not 1986, but that doesn't affect the meaning of this piece.

Here I am modeling my new suit, purchased because I got too fat for my old one over the winter, and I needed one in a hurry to go to a fancy zoo event.

The pants were way too long, so my friend Nan came over to hem them for me. This is how we learned that irons are bad for the finish on a wood table top. The pants looked good though!

Earlier that day I rode 10 miles in the Jonathan Gilmour Memorial Fund ride by myself, and the only picture I took was this one of an apple orchard, as I whizzed by.

Here we are, your 2014 Zoo Crew! This is the largest group we've assembled for a 25 mile ride yet. Ours was also the team that raised the most money for the scholarship (thanks in no small measure to you wonderful people).

Here's a fellow zookeeper and I in traffic on 93 on the way back from the Gilmour Bike Ride. Thanks so much to those of you who donated! I was mopey at first, but got quite a few donations and I'm honored by your generosity. The money goes to a terrific scholarship program; most of the riders on my team are scholarship recipients.

This should be especially informative for those of you outside the U.S.

In Utah women are primarily vessels for incubating children, and they will be punished if they act otherwise.

In Arizona, thinly veiled racism is alive and well. (bonus fun fact: Arizona was one of the last 3 states to make Martin Luther King day a holiday; the others being "Confederate Flag" South Dakota and our next state...)

New Hampshire is hilariously explicit with its bigotry!

I know you'll think I'm cherry picking weird news stories about politicians being insane, and I am, but fair is fair. My state?

In Massachusetts we equate voter frustration with flying an airplane into a building full of people.

We wrote some stuff on the car with soap, and then drove around New Hampshire yesterday.
We've both donated money, but haven't done anything material for the campaign, and are feeling anxious, like we can't sit around and let the election just happen.  What will driving around the nearest swing state in a car covered with slogans accomplish?  No idea, but it made us feel a little better.
That's it for the politics, I promise! Ten naturey pictures follow. )
