One of the great things about Naples Zoo is that there are keeper encounters all day long, so you can plan your visit around them, and enjoy a rich educational experience. This two-toed sloth was brought out after a show that included a half-dozen species, three zookeepers, and a script with entertaining jokes as well as good conservation information.

I got a trailer for my bike so I can carry cargo around the zoo.

Tracking quiz! Who left this track in the snow? Track is about 2 inches (+/- 4 cm) top to bottom, tracks in a line behind one another spaced about 10-12 inches apart. Tracks were found in the same area as cottontail tracks.

Outside my office window a gray squirrel tests the slope of this bird feeder. He didn't defeat it while I was watching but I'm sure he did eventually.

We were given the okay to bring our bikes to work to get between different areas of the zoo. I'm all over it, although it could have been timed with better weather.

The "wintry mix" (rain, sleet, snow: Alexis suggested an alternate phrase "bag of shit") resulted in this giraffe skin pattern of bubbles under the slushy icy all over the tarmac.

Alexis and Albee taking an afternoon nap together. We've been so tired since last weekend in New York. I blame the puppy a little, but other things have come up to prevent us from sleeping as much as we should. I was happy to see her grab some sleep out in the yard.

Once again I thank you for donating to the Gilmour Fund on my behalf. I'm proud to have gone through it and I'm still laughing at myself for struggling so much. At least there was no lasting damage, and I feel pretty good already. Would you like to see some pictures from the ride?

I just rode a mountain bike 25 miles and boy is my taint in a lot of pain. About a mile in the Gilmour Ride my back tire started to look like asymmetrical, like it might swell out of the rim and explode (I've been there). One of my riding buddies, Sarah, had a spare bike so we all went back and I got on it. It was a little more comfortable than mine, but it was a full on mountain bike with big knobby tires that are great for trail riding but make you work extra hard on the road compared to smooth tires.

I rode lead for about half the ride, then started to slow down. My partners had to stop twice to let me catch up. We were almost dead last (a friend riding the 50 mile course took that honor) but there was still food and festivities back at the barn. I don't remember a time when I've been so tired after a bike ride. I'm still barely able to walk and I'm crazy lightheaded. We took a picture of all the zoo folks, lingered a bit, and went in and got my free massage (I think that's the main reason I participate).

I raised 305 dollars with your help, and that figure seemed to impress the organizers, and the zoo president. Jonathan Gilmour sure has a lot of friends even though he's not with us any more, and I am so thankful for them for this event that helps us all become better zookeepers and better conservationists.

Now if you'll excuse me I have to waddle the dogs.

The Bird's World department has moved from a golf-cart based transportation system to one based on bicycles. I hope other areas follow suit. (My fantasy is to get a bike truck for pest control use.)

Something very scary has to happen in this location, in our snapshot horror movie.

Here's a fellow zookeeper and I in traffic on 93 on the way back from the Gilmour Bike Ride. Thanks so much to those of you who donated! I was mopey at first, but got quite a few donations and I'm honored by your generosity. The money goes to a terrific scholarship program; most of the riders on my team are scholarship recipients.

Last year I received a Jonathan Gilmour Memorial Scholarship, and went to Jersey to take a course on zoo pest control and endangered species conservation. People who work at zoos, if I may generalize, are passionate animal lovers and dedicated conservationists, who don't make much money. This scholarship (memorializing a young zookeeper who died during a conservation trip) provides opportunities for these passionate and dedicated people to apply their commitment to wildlife and the environment, taking classes and participating in field work that would otherwise be out of their reach. This allows them to be better stewards of the environment, better conservationists, and better caretakers for their animals.

I am very grateful to David and Peggy Gilmour for establishing this scholarship in their son's name. They have chosen a really meaningful and lasting way to remember him, and honor what was really important to him.

In this spirit I have decided to join the Gilmour Scholarship Fund Bike Ride, happening on May 7th. Honestly, I decided last year that I would participate, and I thought that by now I would have gotten myself into shape enough to do the ride. Alas, I don't even have air in my tires, and the ride is only three weeks away. Back when I was bicycling every day, 25 miles was a piece of cake. Now I'm nervous about it--which is good, right? It will be an achievement of some kind.

Please consider making a donation to the fund in my name, here: http://www.zoonewengland.org/netcommunity/jef

Any amount is great! Five dollars is not too small. I'm setting 750 as an ambitious target, since that's the upper limit of a Gilmour scholarship award, and I would love to say that I helped provide an entire scholarship. Thanks very much!

(Those of you who donated to my last charity drive, your stickers are in the envelopes, and should be in the mail this weekend--I really appreciate it!)

One morning before classes I walked around outside the zoo. The first thing I encountered was this large (8 inch diameter cap) mushroom. Possibly Agaricus sp.

If you see a guy riding a bike pulling Patience the Trailer around Brookline and Boston, it's not me, and it's not a thief! I have passed the trailer along to my neighbor Pat, who is trying to live car-free. Since my life is admittedly quite car-full these days, it's only fitting that Pat has the trailer now.

Yesterday was the most pleasant October 31st in my memory--sunny, 70 degrees, breezy. And, since it was a Saturday, most everyone could get out and enjoy it. We took the opportunity to walk in our nearby park (instead of our usual weekend drive to some place a few miles away). It was so beautiful out there that I filled up my sd card, a first for this new camera. (I'll be buying a bigger card before I go anywhere special.) When I got home I found a theme emerged, which will help me spread the massive amount of images onto a couple posts. Without further ado: pairs of people on bikes in Olmsted Park.
